Power of Sports | Community Spotlight - Urban Surf 4 Kids

Catching Waves. Changing Lives.

Few cities in America rival San Diego when it comes to interest in water sports.

Kayaks, paddleboards, and surfing are all entrenched in the culture of the city. But access to these sports is a challenge for many young people.

Especially those from broken homes and families.

Urban Surf 4 Kids is a San Diego non-profit organization that provides water access to these children. But the impact they make goes far beyond what happens on the water.

At each surf camp, the group provides a day for both foster youth and volunteers to be introduced to the healing natures of the ocean while interacting with fellow foster youth and mentors.

When the kids tread back to the shore after a long day out on the waves, they feel refreshed. Each wave that passed them wore down the rocky burdens they previously carried with them into the camp.

Suddenly, they’re riding a wave of empowerment to face the world in front of them with patience and openness.
