Sports have an uncanny ability to fill whatever void we have in our life.
For Luther Crenshaw, that void was a father figure.
You wanna grow up and learn how to be a man, but you gotta have somebody to show you.
Growing up without a positive male influence to look up to and learn from, Luther found himself following in the wrong footsteps. By middle school, he was immersed in a world of gangs, drugs, and guns.
The chaos that drew him in is also the chaos that made him realize he needed a way out.
They were shooting people and selling weed. I almost got killed.
That way out was a football field renovated by Fields & Futures and a coach that saw a kid in need.
Without that field, Luther would have never met Coach Gregory Rideau, a football coach that knows his responsibilities don’t stop at teaching X’s and O’s.
Whatever they look for in that gang, they’re gonna look for it because they can’t find it somewhere else.
From Day 1, Coach Rideau gave Luther the attention and guidance he had been missing his whole life. From Day 1, they formed an unbreakable bond. The kind formed between a father and a son.
Today, Luther Crenshaw isn’t just learning how to play football. He’s learning how to be a man.
